What Is An Orthodontist?
Before becoming an orthodontic specialist, a student must complete college and four years of dental school. The student will then take an additional two or three years of a residency program in advanced orthodontics accredited by the American Dental Association.
Only a dentist who has completed the additional years of training and education after dental school may properly be called an orthodontist.
What Is Orthodontics?
The word ‘orthodontics’ is derived from the Greek words for straight and tooth and the specialty is dedicated to the study and treatment of improper bites (malocclusions) caused by tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.
Strictly speaking, orthodontics focuses on dental displacement. When it ventures into issues of facial development, which is strongly affected by the teeth and the jaw, it is called Dentofacial Orthopedics.
You may seek orthodontic care for aesthetic reasons to improve the look of your face and your teeth or you may be looking for more practical care that improves your ability to bite and eat properly.
